Alzheimer Care in British Columbia

Source: The Care Guide

Alzheimer care providers offer specialized care and supportive programs for persons with Alzheimer Disease or other forms of memory loss or cognitive impairment. Providers may include Residential Care Homes in a designated, secure section of the residence, as well as Home Care and Home Support Services.

“These facilities offer care that fosters a residents' individual skills and interests in an environment that helps to diminish confusion and agitation. Specialty services are provided in a secure environment; such as activity programs designed to include reality orientation classes and specially trained professional staff skilled in handling the behaviour associated with memory impairments. Many facilities that specialize in Alzheimer's or related dementia disorders have building design features that assist with the problems associated with this disease: colour-coded hallways, visual cues, and secure wandering paths for additional security.” *

Alzheimer Care is usually provided through a secured unit for individuals with Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia and is designed to maintain quality of life for residents as their needs change, through the course of their disease.

The Alzheimer Society of B.C. offers a variety of support and education programs throughout the province. One of these programs is the Family Caregiver Series, an educational series for those caring for a person with dementia. The Family Caregiver Series helps explain what dementia is, and provides the keys to manage quality of life, as well as coping skills to help manage workload, grief and stress.

To learn more about the programs and services offered by the Alzheimer Society, contact your local Alzheimer Resource Centre.
