Help! Mom Had a Fall
Tuesday, October 23, 2007
Question
Three days ago my mom fell and broke her hip and had an emergency hip replacement. My Dad is not coping well, he is very confused, can’t seem to understand where my Mom has gone, and what he should do? My brother and I have our own young families and we both work. This is all so overwhelming. What can we do?
Answer
If you can, ask for help from a senior care consultant, as in Senior Care Select. They can connect you to the appropriate people to ensure both your parents are looked after properly.
Your Mom will need you to be with her, and perhaps she may need a caregiver with her the first day post-operative.
Your
Dad will need to have someone to stay with him. Often what happens in
a relationship is that your Mom fills in the blanks for your Dad, she
covers for him and is his right hand, and often the children have no
idea that there may be a problem.
He may or may not get
confused if you take him to your home. The senior care consultant can
meet with you and your Dad and develop an appropriate plan of care; for
example it could be meal preparation, cleaning-up, and laundry, feeding
and walking the dog, taking your Dad to see your Mom.
Care is supplied by an accredited agency with staff that is bonded and insured.
Once the crisis is over the senior care consultant can help to plan the next steps.
The
imporant thing here is to ensure that your Mom or Dad will be well
taken care of, even if you or your loved ones are not able to be there
all the time. You are not and don't have to be alone in the process of
making such a huge life decision.
A senior care consultant
has the knowledge and tools to help you and your loved ones make an
informed decision about what to do with Mom or Dad or both when
situations like yours arrive. They are there to help and we encourage
you to use them if you feel lost or frustrated or even just want some
advice on what care your Mom or Dad may need.
